PERSIAN LONGHAIR - BREED PROFILE

Anyone intending to share his or her home with a Persian cat should give careful thought to the personality of the cat complimenting that of the owner.

These beautiful cats have a sweet, gentle personality, with a quiet melodious voice.  Being creatures of habit, they are most at home in an atmosphere of security and serenity. However, with love and reassurance, they can adapt to a livelier environment.  They are tremendously responsive and communicate with their large expressive eyes.  Playful, but not demandingly so, often preferring to 'people watch' as a form of exercise!  The lengthy grooming of their coat has to be done with patience and love, but this routine, far from being arduous, is often instrumental in cementing the special cat/owner bond for which the Persian is well known.  Their companionship is close and enduring.  If these traits appeal, then the Persian cat is for you.

Persians come in many colours, but the overall type and body structure should conform as follows:

A large round head, short thick neck, with small round ears set far apart and low on the head.  Large, round eyes, and a short, broad nose, creating a 'sweet expression' of the face.  Typical for the profile is the stop, or break, between the nose and the forehead.  Full cheeks, broad and strong jaws, and a well-developed chin are also part of a typical Persian's head.  A medium to large powerful body and short, sturdy legs should complete an overall harmonious shape.  The large round paws have 5 digits on the front paws and 4 digits on the back paws.  They are closely spaced with long tufts of fur between them.  The tail is short in good proportion to the body length.  The fur is dense and full; however, the full adult coat often does not develop until the second annual moult.

A well-bred Persian is a hardy and healthy cat, but the large eyes do mean that a certain amount of tearing is normal, and a daily face wash is advisable.

Kittens are normally available at 13 weeks of age, having had their basic inoculations and developed the physical and social stability needed for a new environment.
