Be careful what products you use to keep your house clean as manufacturers can have a habit of reformulating some tried and trusted products. One of these that has been brought to our attention recently is SAVLON DISINFECTANT. This now contains an ingredient called Benzalkonium Chloride, which is poisonous to cats. This substance has a burning effect if it comes into contact with the skin or if it is injested.
The Veterinary Poisons information Service say that Benzalkonium Chloride ranks number 15 in the number of enquires made by vets, and eight cats are known to have died having been poisoned by it.
Always check the labels of any products you use. Some companies will give their own warnings, whilst others will state whether it can be used around pets or needs to be thoroughly rinsed. Avoid products that contain phenols which turn milky in water.
If you suspect your cat has ingested a poisonous substance, it is vital that you take him/her to a vet as soon as possible.
