Foods to Avoid Feeding Your Cat

Some foods which are edible for humans, and even dogs, can be dangerous for cats because of their different metabolism.  Some of the foods cause only mild digestive upsets, whilst others can cause severe illness, and even death.

The following list is by no means complete, but covers the more common food items that should not be fed to you cat, either intentionally or unintentionally.

 

 Alcoholic Beverages  Can cause intoxication. coma, and death
 Baby Food  May contain onion pwder which can be toxic to cats. (See onion below). May also result in nutritional deficiency if baby food is fed in large amounts.
 Fish, Poultry or other meat conating bones  Can cause obstruction or laceration of the digestive system
 Canned Tuna (for Human consumption)  Large amounts can cause malnutrition as it lacks proper levels of vitamins and minerals your cat needs.
 Chocolate, coffee, tea and other beverages containing caffeine  Contain Caffeine, Theobromine, or Theophylline, which can be toxic and affect the heart and nervous system
 Citrus Oil Extract  Can cause vomiting
 Dog Food  If fed regularly will cause malnutrition and  may also cause disease affecting the heart
 Fat Trimmings  Can cause Pancreatitis
 Grapes and Raisins  Contain a toxin which can cause damage to the kidneys
 Human vitamin supplements containing Iron  Can damage the lining of the digestive system and be toxic to the other organs including the liver and kidneys
 Large amounts of Liver  Can cause Vitamin A toxicity which affects the muscles and bones
 Macadamia Nuts  Contain a toxin which can affect the digestive system, nervous system and muscles
 Marijuana!!  Can depress the nervous system, cause vomiting and change the heart beat rate
 Milk and other dairy products intended for Humans  Can cause diarrhea. Most cats do not have sufficient amounts of the enzyme lactase which breaks down the  lactose in milk. 
 Mushrooms  Some varieties of mushrooms contain a toxin that can affect multiple systems in the body, cause shock and result in death.
 Onions and Garlic (Raw, cooked or powder/granular form)  Contain sulfoxides and disulfides which can damage the red blood cells and cause anemia.  Garlic is less toxic than onions
 Persimmons  The seeds can cause intenstinal obstruction and enteritis
 Potatoes  Contain oxalates which can affect the digestive, nervous and urinary systems.
 Raw Eggs  Contain an enzyme called avidin which decreases the absorption of Biotin (one of the B vitamins) which can lead to skin and coat problems.  Raw eggs may also contain Salmonella.
 Raw Fish  Can result in thiamine (one of the B vitamins) deficiency leading to loss of appetite, seizures, and in severe cases, death.  More common if raw fish is fed regularly.
 Rhubarb  Rhubarb contains oxalates. See 'Potatoes' above
 Salt  If consummed in large quantities can lead to electrolyte imbalances
 Sugary Foods  Can lead to obesity, dental problems and possibly diabetes mellitus
 Table Scraps  Table scraps are not nutritionally balanced, and if fed, should only make up 10% of the cats overall diet
 Yeast Dough  Can expand and produce gas in the digestive system, causing pain and possible rupture of the stomach or intestines
